Separating Food and Fitness 🍽↔️🏋🏻‍♀️

I wanted to give you guys a little training update as well as a little shift in my way of thinking. As I mentioned before, I’ve been training only 45 min to an hour just 3 days a week and I love it. My workouts are all full body and it just works with my busy schedule. I’m in the process of moving to New Orleans on top of other life priorities, so this allows me to train (which I still love doing) but doesn’t take over my life like it used to.

Also, and maybe most importantly, I’ve started completely separating food and fitness. Even as recently as last year I was thinking that if I want to be stronger, I need to fuel my body sufficiently to be strong. That’s not wrong by any means, but it took me down the path of thinking “oh I ate a lot, now I have to go lift heavy tomorrow” even if I didn’t want to or plan to lift that day.

I started separating them in the same way I separate fitness and shopping. If I shop, it has nothing to do with my training. Aka if I eat a lot, it has nothing to do with my training. I do my 3 full body workouts a week irrespective of the way I eat. Likewise, I eat what I want to satiety, irrespective of my training.

Just a little update and yes, I change my mentality all the time. It’s part of growing and learning what’s best for me and my body 😇

Every Day is Mother’s Day ♥️💐
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I want to tell you a story. I’m going to leave out some details, but this story might explain why I’m so close to my mom and why she’s such a big part of my life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I was 7, I started seeing less and less of her and when I was 9, she was gone. I caught a glimpse of her when I was 14, but I didn’t see her again until I was 16. It took months to find her and when I did, I promised myself I would never lose her again. I made sure she had a cell phone and from that point on, I spoke to my mom on the phone EVERY SINGLE NIGHT at 6pm on the dot. I did this for the remainder of high school, through college, through grad school and through my entire PhD. I almost NEVER missed a call. If I had an engagement, I would tell her I would call her back and I always did. She showed me more love and care in those years than I have ever known was possible, always cheering me on, always supporting everything I did, even if she didn’t really understand what I was doing.

I remember my roommates in college saying “oh it must be six, Steph’s mom is calling”. My friends, roommates, lab colleagues and PhD mentor alway knew when it was six o’clock, because I would be on the phone with my mom. This was the case unless I was with her as she visited me often by taking the train. She did that in every phase of my academic journey, regardless of where I lived or where she lived.

After I defended my PhD in 2017, it was the first time I was free enough to move her close to me. With her illnesses, my sister and I have been there as we continue to battle all of her health issues. She’s my best friend and closest confidant, and I will cherish her like it’s Mother’s Day every day, always and forever ♥️

My definition of healthy 🌸

Honestly, this by far the best my mental health has been in regards to my body, food and just life in general. I have no clue how much I weigh and I don’t care. I genuinely feel healthy. It’s a strange feeling to describe, but I can say with confidence that I’m eating well (and eating enough), I have a normal and regular menstrual cycle, my stress is manageable, energy is good and my mood has been great. It may not fit your definition of healthy, but it fits mine ♥️

Life is good when you’re not constantly hungry, thinking about food or thinking about what you’re going to eat once your intermittent fasting window is finally open 😵‍💫 You can actually live in the moment and enjoy time with friends and family - and of course not be afraid of eating something you can’t track in MyFitness Pal 🫠

We all know social media has subliminally brain washed us all into thinking everyone looks perfect all the time. It’s like we KNOW it’s not true, but we also lowkey kinda think it’s true. Friendly reminder…it’s not 🙃
